Into adulthood with a range of competencies

Polars courses are designed for high school students. These courses are eclectic in terms of the content they learn. They are characterized by collecting content and interpreting it, as well as building new skills on strong foundations of grammar and vocabulary. The goal of Polars courses is the FCE state exam and the CAE state exam. Young people who use Polars courses prepare themselves to speak the language independently on all levels - speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Thanks to the Polars courses being rooted in relationships and creating an educational space so that everyone has comfort and safety, acceptance and time, young people learn the language naturally and use their innate enthusiasm to acquire new skills and competences. The lack of tests after sections, and the presence of evaluation - which to a large extent involve participants in programming their language achievements - contribute to noticeable language effects. Young people are very willing to take responsibility for their skills and use what their mentors offer them during classes. The map and language compass works as a challenge – different for everyone and with a changed appearance. At the same time, as a group we are heading towards one goal, considering different possibilities of achieving it.
Openness and transparency, as well as mutual trust and feedback are the success factors of Polars courses. Mentors show young people the door, but it is up to them to decide whether they want to enter it or whether they prefer to do it on their own terms and find another way. Support and balance, and consequently observation and reflection of where a given person is in the process of learning English, give the opportunity to confront one's own assumptions and allow for verification of further action. Feedback is another component of Polars courses - provided in an open manner and with listening to the teenager's needs, it allows the message to land and not be identified with an attack. This is especially important when the information that the mentor wants to convey is different from the teenager's assumption.
Polars courses are classes thanks to which young people acquire a full range of competences – both linguistic, emotional and social, as well as gaining knowledge about the realities of English-speaking countries.

Wondering if it's worth it? Decide for yourself

In the 21st century, we want young people to have different skills and attitudes to life than those developed by schools in the 19th century. Back then, it was important to educate as many people as possible who would not have high skills, but who would be obedient and would perform their duties without asking questions. This goal was important from the point of view of the needs of the times in which the idea of mass school was created - the technical and industrial revolution. Today, we look at the generation of young people differently, we want to listen to their needs, give them acceptance and space to find balance in their relationships with themselves, the world and others. We want to be present in their world, point out possibilities and see what choices they will make and how they will decide for themselves whether a given path is for them, or whether achieving the goal will happen in a completely different way. When we look at a young person - a teenager - from the perspective of the processes taking place in their brain, then a whole new perspective opens up of looking at the world with chance and possibility - where everything is within reach, the only thing that limits us is our "want". That is why it is so important to take care of enthusiasm and internal motivation in Home of Bears courses, which pushes a person to act, motivation that allows you to achieve a goal without being stifled by evaluation or reward. Such activities contribute to self-development and allow you to be responsible for your own actions.
At Home of Bears, we want our students and young people to know that what is strengthened in themselves, later grows in them. What does this mean from the perspective of language development? It means that listening to your own needs and the ability to communicate them in a way that is heard and understood are the foundation of success.

🐾 FAQ – Polars (13+ years)

1. Who is the Polars course for?

The Polars course is intended for young people aged 13 and over – students in grades 7–8 and high schools. We create a space for teenagers who want to speak English freely, authentically and without fear. We especially welcome people who do not find themselves in the rigid school formula of teaching.

2. Do you prepare for exams?

We do not organize typical exam courses, but we teach in such a way that students have real language skills. Thanks to this, they are better prepared for all tests - not through "cramming", but through understanding and practice. Young people from the Polars course gain self-confidence, which is also useful on exams.

3. What topics are covered in the classes?

We talk about things that are important to young people – relationships, emotions, challenges, dreams and the world around them. We touch on authentic topics that give space to express one's own opinions and build an identity in English.

4. Are there assessments and tests?

We do not use assessments, tests or comparisons of results. Instead, we focus on conversation, cooperation and joint reflection. We create an atmosphere in which young people can be themselves, make mistakes and develop at their own pace - without fear and pressure.

5. Can I join during the year?

Yes – if there are any vacancies in a given group, new students can join during the semester. We make sure that the new person is taken care of and introduced in a calm manner, respecting their pace and personality.

6. How many people are in the group?

Groups consist of 6 to 8 people. This makes the classes more interactive, everyone has a voice and can count on the attention of the leader. This number of participants promotes a relaxed atmosphere and building trust.

7. How long does one lesson last?

The lesson lasts 60 minutes and includes elements of conversation, short scenes, work with text or film, language games and reflection. Each part is connected to the emotions and lives of the students - we do not work "dry".

8. Is the course suitable for shy teenagers?
